Hi running friends, colleagues and blog readers -- a few thoughts and comments, and a note that I sent Andy after reading this (below).

First, I was honored and blown away when I read this post. I am fan of Andy's writing and blogging, but never in my wildest did I think I'd be a subject!

Second, Andy and SHCP Irish accepted me (a reformed St. Francis Lancer runner) from the moment I began coaching. I have truly loved and appreciated every moment with this great running family.

Lastly, my commitment to helping high school students and athletics in particular remains a chief motivation in my life, so although I'm not formally coaching with SHCP, expect to see me here and there in a support role. To quote Andy, "I couldn't imaging anywhere I'd rather be."

Now, my note to Andy:

Andy,

What a surprise and honor to read this blog post. I am truly flattered by your words. You eloquently summed up amy experiences over the past 7 years, and I am grateful for your tribute.

In those years I've learned from the best coach, Andy Chan, and program, SHCP. I've also been blessed to be among some of the best assistant coaches and colleagues: Janet Jew, Sheri Logiudice, Christine Jegan, Mark Hermano, Rachel G, Nathalie Martinez, Rhiannon, Layman Reid, Art Higgans and many more, plus great ADs Phil and JoAnn.

Chiefly though, you Andy, and the kids have been a source of inspiration, information, and thrilling athletic performance. Indeed the Irish have a family atmosphere socially, and a college atmosphere in training and competition. And throughout the hard work and some tough times, you find ways to keep things in balance, with your humor, and willingness to be silly at the right times -- whether wearing that enormous leprechaun hat, or allowing the kids to douse you with cold ice water at CCS.

When I say I learned from the best, I'm serious. As a coach you're always watching what other programs do, what their coaches say, and which ones can see sport as a means to a higher goal. Every day that I've grabbed my bike and headed out the door to Kezar or over to JK for our workouts I've always had the same thought: What a privilege to work with these kids, with this program and this head coach. No exaggeration -- every coaching day and every meet from 2004 - 2011 has felt like this.

As you said in your conclusion, I hope to make it by this year for some Saturday runs, and cheering at meets. I also hope very sincerely to return to the program and the school environment as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'll reflect on the truly amazing coaching moments I've had the honor of experiencing

Thank you sincerely, and Go Irish!
